Safia Vintage offers unique vintage and handmade carpets from around the world. By sourcing directly from artisans responsible for weaving each rug sold on this site, we are driving economic development and protecting rich cultural traditions and heritage in countries such as Afghanistan and Iraq. Each rug is a piece of art and tells a story from the person who made it and the homes it has lived in prior to your purchase.
"Safia" was the name I was given by my host family in Mauritania (West Africa) where I served as a Peace Corps Volunteer for two years. Safia means "pure" in Arabic, the primary language spoken in Mauritania.
You will find a variety of rugs on this website: kilims from Herat province in Afghanistan, wool Beni Ourain rugs from the Atlas mountains in Morocco and many other styles and origins. Each creation is handmade and therefore no two rugs are the same. You may detect small imperfections - this is simply due to the fact that the rug was not produced by a machine and any flaws show character and the vintage nature of the rug. A detailed description of each piece's style, origin and approximate age is provided.
Design-forward carpets that tell a story.
